Description
Opened in 1992, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza houses one of the world's most prestigious private art collections. Acquired by the Spanish State in 1993, the collection spans from the late 13th century to the 1980s.
The guided tour covers the permanent collection across three floors. It starts on the second floor with medieval Italian paintings, then continues through the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Dutch school is featured in early second-floor rooms, including scenes of everyday life, landscapes, and still lifes.
Modern painting begins in Room 29, highlighting 19th-century American art, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and German Expressionism. The ground floor showcases 20th-century art, including Cubism, abstraction, Surrealism, Pop Art, and post-war European figurative art.
This museum offers the most extensive chronological scope of any in Madrid.
Important: The museum frequently rotates artworks, so some masterpieces may be temporarily unavailable due to loans or restoration. The Carmen Thyssen Collection is not included in the guided tour but is available for independent viewing, though it may be closed on certain days.
