It starts with a morning drive to Toledo, famous for the happy coexistence of Christians, Muslims, and Jews through the centuries. Marvel at architecture influenced by the Arabs, and of Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, including the 13th-century Gothic cathedral. Go to the Church of Santo Tome to see El Greco's masterpiece 'El Entierro del Senor de Orgaz' (The Burial of the Count of Orgaz), and discover the oldest still-standing synagogue building in Europe at Santa Maria la Blanca. Wander the Jewish Quarter to the Museum of Victorio Macho to admire the works of one of Spain’s most famous sculptors. Learn about the historic victory over the army of Afonso V of Portugal at the Battle of Toro by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile as you explore the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. Then, visit a Damasquino (Damascene) factory to see the precious jewelry brought to Spain by the Moors. Continue to the monastery complex of El Escorial, built by King Philip II to house the remains of Charles I and Isabella of Portugal. Admire the impressive Hapsburg Palace, and the Kings and Princes Mausoleum of the Royal Seat of San Lorenzo. Drive down into the valley to tour the vast monument built in the sides of the mountain between 1940 and 1959, and see the impressive cross that overlooks the magnificent nature reserve of the Sierra de Madrid.
