Leave Madrid behind at 9:30 am and reach Toledo, Spain's city of three cultures, in under an hour - no coach, no crowd, just your own small group and your guide in a comfortable hybrid car that slips easily through the narrow medieval streets. You start with the view every postcard uses: the Mirador del Valle, where the whole walled city rises above the Tagus river. From there you head into the old town for a walking tour of two to three hours through lanes that Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, Jews and Christians all called home. Your cathedral ticket is included, so you go inside Toledo's great Gothic cathedral to see the carved choir stalls, the sacristy paintings and the extraordinary Transparente. Along the way there is time for a coffee or a light lunch, a taste of the marzipan Toledo has been making since the Middle Ages, and a look at a craftsman inlaying gold into steel - the damascene work the city has been famous for since Moorish times. You will also have time to browse for souvenirs before the drive back to Madrid. The day runs six to seven hours door to door. We collect you at your hotel or apartment in Madrid and bring you back there afterwards. Fuel, tolls, parking and the cathedral ticket are all covered by the price, and because the group is only yours, the pace is yours too - tell us what interests you most and we adjust the day around it. A child seat is available free of charge: tell us the child's age and weight when booking. Toledo's old town is hilly and cobbled, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
