Descalzas Reales

 

Descalzas Reales is a cloistered convent of Poor Clare barefoot nuns, and was the residence of the Emperor Carlos I and his wife Isabel, and where their daughter Juana was born. Juana established the cloistered order, along with the Duke of Gandía, Saint Francisco de Borja, who helped her found the convent sending several nuns to start proper activities. The tomb of Queen Juana is in the convent´s chapel and its tombstone is decorated with a figure of her praying. 

Fresco paintings from the XVII century are featured on the stairs and in the Miracle Chapel, as well as tapestries by Ruben representing the apotheosis of the Eucharist.
