Description

From the monument to Isabel II in the square that bears her name, we will take a tour of Madrid in the most comprehensive way possible. We will start behind the Teatro Real, with a map of what Madrid used to look like and what awaits us, then we will walk around the theater, telling its history and its many uses, without forgetting the origins of the expression '¡Mucha m*****!' (roughly translated as 'f*** you'). We will then pass through the Plaza del Oriente to reach the largest palace in Western Europe. Yes, the Royal Palace of Madrid, the official seat of the monarchy. Here we will talk about the Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, and a statue in whose construction Galileo Galilei himself participated. Then we'll take a stroll through Madrid de los Austrias, greeting curious neighbors who gaze at the foundations of the old Almudena Cathedral. We'll talk about the assassination attempt on Alfonso XIII, some slightly scatological traditions, the beginnings of the 'Villa' of Madrid, and we'll walk along Calle del Codo, where the writer Quevedo used to walk, and then continue on to the Plaza Mayor. Once a market, the Plaza Mayor has more than four centuries of history, fires, memories of war, and, oh yes, the oldest restaurant in the world! In just a few steps, we'll be at Puerta del Sol, the heart of Madrid. In the square, we'll see the point where all of Spain's roads and Madrid's streets begin. We'll go up to Gran Vía and tell some of its legends, then return to Puerta del Sol to end our tour next to the statue of the bear and the strawberry tree.
