King Felipe II ordered the construction of the Monastery in 1563 as a tribute and tomb for his father, Emperor Carlos V. It was intended to serve as a spiritual and cultural center of the Spanish empire and a symbol of the power of the monarchy and the Catholic faith, in the midst of the Counter-Reformation. To this end, it would have several functions: monastery, basilica, royal pantheon, library, and college.
